MATTRESS BUYING GUIDE

Buying a mattress can feel overwhelming—especially if it’s your first time purchasing one. New buyers often ask: Which mattress brand is best? Which type of mattress should I buy? Which mattress size is right for me? Well, read on! Our mattress buying guide takes the confusion out of purchasing a mattress.

WHICH TYPE OF MATTRESS SHOULD I BUY?

Mattress Buying Guide

Innerspring Mattress

The most common mattress, an innerspring mattress combines supportive coils with cushioned upholstery. Encased (or pocketed) coils conform to the body and reduce motion transfer while other types of coils are less elastic, providing extra support.

Latex Mattress

Hypoallergenic and breathable, latex mattresses are made of materials derived from the rubber tree. Boasting a long life span and good support, they lightly conform to the body’s shape with a springy feel. And because they’re breathable, they also offer excellent airflow to help regulate body temperature.

Memory Foam Mattress

Foam mattresses mold to your body, offering support while relieving pressure. Memory foam mattresses also reduce motion transfer, so you’re less likely to be disturbed by movement on the other side of the bed.

Pillow Top Mattress

A pillow top mattress is constructed of extra layers of upholstery that are separately quilted and then sewn to the top for added cushioning. Pillow top mattresses are perfect for those who prefer the added cushioning.

Tight Top Mattress

A tight top is a mattress that has a standard, non-pillow top. Because tight top mattresses do not have an extra layer of cushioning, they are typically preferred by those who enjoy a firm bed.

Hybrid Mattress

Hybrid mattresses combine the comfort of memory foam or latex with the support of an innerspring. Both structures work together to conform to your body, relieve pressure and muscle tension, and maintain correct alignment.

Handmade Mattress

Experienced craftspeople utilize traditional techniques to individualize luxury handmade mattresses. This includes hand-woven quilting layers, hand-sewn edges, and hand-tied box springs.

Two-Sided Mattress

Recommended for anyone sensitive to body impressions, durable two-sided mattresses are upholstered on both sides and can be flipped regularly to extend the bed’s life.

WHICH MATTRESS FIRMNESS IS RIGHT FOR ME?

The amount of support you need varies significantly from person to person. A comfortable mattress should relieve pressure points for you. The perfect mattress firmness offers the same natural curve as your back when you’re standing.

Firm Mattress

Firm Mattress

A sturdy top with little to no give. A firm mattress is typically preferred by stomach sleepers.

Medium Firm Mattress

Medium Firm Mattress

A firm top with some give. A medium firm mattress is typically preferred by back sleepers.

Plush Mattress

Plush Mattress

Noticeable give, medium soft. A medium plush mattress is typically preferred by side sleepers.

Ultra Plush Mattress

Ultra Plush Mattress

Soft with significant give. A plush mattress is typically preferred by back and side sleepers.

TIP

To check your mattress, lie down and slide your hand under the small of your back. If it passes through too easily, your mattress may be too firm.

SHOULD I GET A MATTRESS FOUNDATION?

A mattress foundation is designed to provide sturdy, stable support for your mattress. The foundation will also absorb shock, reduce wear, and make it easier to get in and out of bed. Increasingly, more foundations are being created from wood alone, a style that provides excellent support for modern memory foam and latex mattresses.

Mattress Foundation

Standard Box Spring

The most common foundation. Consists of tight, supportive springs in a wood frame. 9" high.

Low-Profile Box Spring

Usually 5" in height, these are ideal for high frames or thick mattresses to reduce overall height.

Split Box Spring

Two separate box springs. This method is used on all king and California king beds to more easily transport the box springs.

Adjustable Base

Adjustable bases allow for unlimited ergonomic positions to support the natural curvature of the spine and ensure the ultimate comfort. With a host of customizable options, these bases allow you to fine-tune your support.
